ABOUT
Hello, I'm Hannah, I’m an architect and artist from the North York Moors in the UK. I design and make wall art prints and greeting cards from my floral artwork.
Ephemie flower art celebrates in flowers, ephemeral and eternal, bold and delicate, in colour, seasons, contradictions, printed product, the tactile, design and a ‘healthy splash’ of kitsch. It is inspired, among many sources, by Japanese woodblock prints and the colour theory teachings of Josef Albers’ in Interaction of Colour to produce vibrant colour combinations that in some cases glow!
Designs start as freehand pencil flower drawings before they become a hand-painted ink line painting. Colour is experimented with and added digitally. Printing and paper choice complete the design process; Prints are printed in dye inks on beautiful, thick, velvety cotton paper and card for colours that sing.
An architectural background characterises much of my work and approach together with a creative ‘make it’ upbringing. Observational drawings of flowers lean towards botanical illustration, detailed and precise, after two decades of technical drawing from plans to construction detailing. Work with colour theory follows early introduction in art class and on Socrates-Erasmus exchange at the Bauhaus-Universität in Weimar. Careful and deliberate selection of paper, printing methods, packaging, details and finishes follow years in architectural education, and small, design-led practice with Modernist roots working on design and specification of building projects.
