Drawing flowers in pencil in progress

ABOUT

Ephemie flower art designs celebrate in flowers, ephemeral and eternal, bold and delicate, in colour, seasons, contradictions, printed product, design and a ‘healthy splash’ of kitsch. They are inspired by Japanese woodblock prints and Josef Albers’ Interaction of Colour to produce vibrant colour combinations that in some cases glow!

Hello, I'm Hannah, I’m an architect and artist from the North York Moors in the UK. I design and make wall art prints and greeting cards from my floral artwork.

PROCESS

Designs start as pencil flower drawings before they become a hand-painted ink painting. Colour is experimented with and added digitally, and printing and paper selection become part of the design process; Prints are printed in dye inks on beautiful, thick, velvety cotton rag.

APPROACH

An architectural background characterises much of my work and approach. Observational drawings of flowers lean towards botanical illustration, detailed and precise, drawing upon two decades of technical drawing from plans to construction detailing. Work with colour theory follows early introduction in art class and whilst on a Socrates-Erasmus year at the Bauhaus-Universität in Weimar. Careful and deliberate selection of paper, printing methods, packaging, details and finishes follow years in both architectural education, and small, design-led practice with Modernist roots working on design and specification of building projects.
